Blackhart Abbey Setup Soup Kitchen & Brewing Competition

The Blackhart Abbey invites the weary traveler to a soup kitchen potluck on Friday night of the war. Take a well earned break from setting up your camp and enjoy a warm tasty meal.

Heavy War Scenarios

RULES:

  1. Weapons are limited to 9′ in length.
  2. No Plate is Proof – Battles will alternate with and without missile combat so everyone can have fun.
  3. Death from Behind and Death on the Ground will be allowed.
  4. Sides will be evened depending on the scenario.
  5. Archery included every other round

9:00 – 10:00: Armor Inspections
10:00 – List Assignments.

Teams will be randomized every round by stone draw.
Belted fighters are in one List,
unbelted are in a second list,
and Combat Archers in a third list.

Each team will elect on General every round.

Scenario 1: Open Field Battle (two rounds)

Round 1 (With Missiles): Each team will have two resurrections during this battle that require fully disengaging from the field and respawning at your respective starting zones.

Generals have one resurrection.

No arrows may be gleaned during combat.

Defenders will have the Acorn and may have any one person be its Bearer. 

Acorn Rules: 

  • Acorn Must Be Held in an otherwise-empty gauntleted hand
  • Acorn Bearers have 360-degree engagement
  • If an Acorn bearer is defeated, the Acorn may be claimed by the opposing team.
  • Acorn cannot be thrown but may be passed

There will be 2 stationary Acorn targets on the field corners (2 for Defenders 2 for Attackers), worth points if knocked down during the battle. These can only be claimed once per round.

Round 2 (No Missiles): Same rules, swap sides.

Scenario 2: Bridge Battle (two rounds)

Round 1 (With Missiles): 15 Minute Timed Battle, 10 Minutes unlimited Resurrections

Raised Banner on the resurrections line will indicate that Resurrection is active. Banner will be dropped at 10 minutes to indicate resurrections have ended for the remainder of the battle.

The Stationary Acorn targets will be 7 feet from the left and right sides of the bridges and 7 feet back from the edge of the bridge for both sides, and if knocked down by missiles or heavy combatants are worth points.

No arrows may be gleaned during combat.

Round 2 (No Missiles): Same rules, swap sides.

Scenario 3: Castle Siege (two rounds)

Each team will have two resurrections during this battle that require fully disengaging from the field and respawning at your respective starting zones.

Generals and Lieutenants have one resurrection.

The Stationary Acorn targets will be 7 feet from the doors of the castle on both sides, and if knocked down by missiles or heavy combatants are worth points.

Siege combatants: May shoot at the Castle Gate or behind Castle walls for points.

Tournaments (Defender and Prize Tournaments)

Bardic Defender

There will be a bardic tournament on Saturday before the potluck feast. Come support your favorite singer, musician or storyteller. Who will be the first Bardic Defender of Mountain Edge.

For those who wish to enter the Bardic, we ask you to bring a single piece that is the best example of your work, be it a song, story, or poem. Sign ups will be available on site.

Youth Defender

The Youth Defender Tournament is changing up this year. Eirikr, the current ME Youth Defender will judge based on the following. An open display of skill in the Arts and Sciences.

To accomplish this, share a craft, art piece, song, or some other medium. Be creative!

Demonstrate skill in the following:

  • historical knowledge
  • performance/ effort
  • presentation

Atli Memorial Axe Tournament (prize tourney)

The axe tournament will be a timed bear pit tournament. We ask that each participant bring a great axe to fight with and the memory of someone to fight for.  The winner will be determined by the participants.

His Lordship, Sargent, Squire Atli Hvetulfr was a long time member of the Shire of Mountain Edge.
He was there when the Acorn Wars began.
This tournament is held in his memory.

Rapier Combat Acorn Tournament

Ransom back our captured allies! Fighters will “buy in” to the tournament with donations or rapier gear – all proceeds are being used to create a rapier loaner kit for the Shire!

You must acquire your starting acorns before the tournament begins. Checks can be made payable to SCA, Inc – Shire of Mountain Edge. Once the tournament starts, no more initial acorns can be attained.

Defeating an opponent will gain you 1 of their acorns. If you still have acorns, you can still challenge others to fight. The tournament will run for 1 hour and at the end, prizes will be awarded to the combatants with the top 3 acorn totals, who will have rescued the most allies from the Squirrel King.

Arts & Sciences Defender Tournament

Good gentles, I am seeking a successor who will defend the Shire of Mountain Edge in the Arts and Sciences.  This is open to any and all, I encourage you to enter even if you have never entered a competition before.  All Arts and Sciences projects qualify for the competition, from period creations, to research presentations, and even cooking/baking and brewing! 

Thy prompt:

Show me your joy!  What is it you like to create or research? Why is it your joy? The competition will be judged on the following categories.

  • Historical basis for the project.  Documentation on how your project/creation is historically accurate. (For example, the leatherwork design used was found in historical records.)
  • Modern techniques/changes/adaptations.  If you made adjustments to your project using modern tools, methods.  (For example, using a sewing machine to create part of your project.)
  • Your joy.  Why did you choose this project? Why does it bring you joy? (This could be in how you will use the project, the creation process, etc.)
  • Quality of the project.  
  • Presentation of your project
  • All projects should also include a squirrel or acorn somewhere in the presentation, documentation, or even worn by the person presenting. 

In order to enter, you need only bring your entry to the event and present it during judging. There will be space in the Pavilion for displays if you would like to display your entry before judging.

Straw into Gold Competition

Divisions:

  • Adult-18 and up
  • Youth 12-17
  • Child, 11 and under.

Rules:

  1. Make an object out of straw from on-site materials. There will be bundles of wheat stalks available, but you may also incorporate other natural materials.
  2. You must either:
    1. Construct your object out of straw using only straw and other natural materials found on site, such as grass, leaves, etc. OR
    2. Using only straw, construct an object which will be thrown. Whichever object can be thrown the farthest will be declared the winner.
  3. Submit your entry Saturday, September 7, 2024, 10:00am at the A&S pavilion
  4. Fill out a submission form, with what materials you used, and what your straw object’s use is.
  5. Winner will be announced at Evening Court.  Winner must attend moot/court to claim the prize.
  6. Pick up your submitted entry after Evening Court if you would like to keep it.

If the entry is not picked up by Sunday, September 8, 2024, 10:00am, they will be discarded.

Archery Defender Tournament

From 11 to 2pm on Saturday, Don the Archer will host an Archery Defender Tournament to determine his successor.
